Various candle safety icons show an exclamation mark warning alongside illustrations of proper and improper use including not leaving candles burning unattended, not placing near flammable objects, not burning near animals or children, keeping candles at least 10cm apart, and not burning near open windows or drafts.

Candle care and safety instructions

Use this information to keep you and your home safe, and to get the most out of your Croft & Wylde candle.

Important candle safety instructions and proper use

Follow these safety instructions to ensure proper use and limit safety risks when using your candles. Burning candles can pose a significant fire hazard if not used correctly.

  • Remove all packaging before use.
  • Never leave a burning candle unattended.
  • Burn candles out of reach of children and pets.
  • Always leave at least 10cm between burning candles.
  • Do not burn candle on or near anything that can catch fire.
  • Only burn this candle on a level heat resistant surface, and use protective coaster supplied.
  • Do not allow the flame to touch the sides of the container, and never attach lid while burning.
  • Ensure the wick is upright, above the wax and central before the wax sets.
  • Always trim wick to 5mm before lighting.
  • Container gets very hot when candle lit.
  • Extinguish when 5mm of wax remains and do not relight.
  • Dispose of residual wax responsibly - do not dispose to drains or sewage systems.
  • Molten wax can cause burns.
  • Do not eat.
  • Seek medical advice if adverse health effects follow use.

Candle care and storage

Follow these care and storage guidelines to make sure your candles stay fresh, burn well and remain ready for use.

  • Before lighting for the first time, ensure the wick is centred and trimmed to the recommended length and the candle has no visible defects.
  • If the wick has been disturbed during shipping or storage, gently recentre it before use.
  • Store candles in an area where the temperature remains stable, ideally between roughly 18°C and 25°C.
  • Never store candles near radiators, heating vents, or in direct sunlight. Temperatures exceeding roughly 30°C can cause the wax to melt or soften.
  • Do not store candles in areas where temperatures drop below roughly 10°C, as rapid cooling can sometimes lead to cracking or pulling away from the container (though this rarely affects performance).
  • Storing candles in their original box or a dark place helps prevent sun exposure, which can cause the wax to fade or yellow.
  • Use the container lid (if provided) to cover the candle when not in use. This protects the wax surface from dust and helps preserve the wax.
  • Always handle a candle container carefully. Cracks or damage to the container can weaken the structure and increase the risk of breakage when heated.

How to use and best practice guidelines

Follow these best practice guidelines to get the most out of your candles and ensure effective use.

  • Burn for at least three hours for the first and second time to achieve an even melt pool.
  • After this, never burn for less than an hour or more than four hours at a time to keep the melt pool even.
  • Always light all wicks at once for candles with more than one wick.
  • If soot begins to collect on the inner rim of the container, extinguish the candle, wait for it to cool, and gently wipe the soot away with a dry paper towel before relighting.
  • Allow the wax pool to solidify completely before relighting. This helps ensure the candle melts evenly on the following burn.
  • After extinguishing, use a snuffer or a metal tool to gently ensure the wick remains centred in the cooling wax pool.
